Rivers of Light

  • Steilacoom Community Church 1603 Rainier Street Steilacoom, Washington, 98388 United States (map)

In the darkest season of the year, we gather around light.

This Christmas, Sonoro Choral Society, under the direction of Jeremy Shilley, invites you to Rivers of Light, an evening of extraordinary choral music inspired by light, wonder, and the beauty of the winter season. Featuring the Sonoro Women’s Choir and Elysium. Sonoro will once again be joined by the award-winning Steilacoom High School Advanced Treble Choir, under the direction of Kasey Eck, along with professional musicians from across the region.

Opening with the joyous sounds of the traditional Gesu Bambino, the evening journeys through music both familiar and unexpected. At the heart of the program is a breathtaking exploration of the music and landscapes of the Baltic and Nordic world—from the dancing skies of Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Northern Lights, through Pärt Uusberg’s deeply moving Mis on inimene?, to Ešenvalds’ luminous Stars. From there, the program turns toward the warmth and exuberance of an Appalachian Christmas, as choir and professional brass quintet bring traditional carols to life with rustic energy and celebration. Finally, as has become a beloved Sonoro tradition, all voices come together by candlelight for Dan Forrest’s exquisite setting of Silent Night.

Experience it all in the beautiful and historic Steilacoom Community Church, where voices, instruments, and light come together in this rich and intimate setting. Step out of the rush of the season and into an evening of beauty, reflection, celebration, and wonder.

Come experience Rivers of Light.
